when i was watching inkigayo to see my hags and newjeans came on before them singing about "im super shy but watch me make you mine", extremely skinny and dressed skimpily, all the fanchants screamed by grown men's voices, it really put into perspective how badly everyone working with and looking at these girls needs to die

everyone in newjeans is under 20, they are girls, some of their management is…downright predatory, and they are idols working in an industry that sexualizes anyone regardless of age. all of this needs to be overemphasized, underlined, highlighted and pointed at with giant red arrows. they’re minors working in a highly visible highly over-sexualized highly exploitative industry.

and none of this immediately means there’s something wrong with liking the group or their content. any newjeans fan with a head on their shoulders probably discusses or considers about the circumstances the girls are in regularly (especially if they’re an adult) because they’re questionable as fck and it’s no coincidence that idols are getting younger and younger in sk. and yes, most of us feel weird about cookie/don’t like cookie/can’t stand it because the concept will always be obviously weird concerning etc. considering newjeans is an underage group and the lyrical content+the way they were dressed+what was explicitly implied for that concept is not appropriate for minors, which everyone in the group is.

not everyone who likes newjeans or works with them in any capacity is a grown person with dangerous or predatory intentions. some fans are teenagers, some fans are adults, some are kids, etc. and saying we need to die isn’t going to add anything to the conversation. “newjeans bad because they’re minors” doesn’t add anything to the conversation because the group isn’t implicitly bad because they’re minors making music, the issue is how the industry they’re working in functions and how the girls are being oversexualized by adults as minors. when people blameshame them for their appearances (and the fact that they even want to make music as a group) as if this world and its bullshit is their responsibility, that draws attention away from the nuance of their realities.

many korean idols are extremely underweight because of korean beauty standards, and saying newjeans was dressed “skimpily” isn’t a hot take (again: minors). this stuff draws attention away from the fact that minors and children aren’t responsible for the circumstances (circumstances that are often directly controlled by and influenced by adults around them) they live in or the opinions of others and should never have to worry about this shit in the first place. newjeans are minors and minors should be able to just make music and exist if that’s what they choose to do without consequences. they shouldn’t have to deal with predatory management, being sexualized by their peers (yes im talking about bambam, ew) or fans or anyone for wearing skirts and shorts and tank tops all normal things teenagers wear (i say this with the nuance of knowing they’re often dressed like this from a sexualized approach and knowing that they should be allowed to wear anything comfortably, this shit is layered, turn ur thinking cap on for me thx) or literally being disliked on the account that they’re minors. being a minor is not an offense. if someone takes offense that’s their business.

liking something ≠ you’re bad or the thing is bad. there’s so much perspective required when it comes to newjeans (and all young idols and idol groups bc there are more and more of them debuting) and i suppose i shouldn’t be surprised that most of the time everyone misunderstands the assignment

it’s the way leeseo debuted at 14 i think… and starship can’t even justify it by saying they needed her for the group because not a single thing in ive’s quality would change if she wasn’t in the group. she should be in school. this goes 1000x for newjeans and babymonster and all the groups whose maknae’s only personality trait is being a middle schooler that isn’t in school
